An elderly woman had her handbag robbed in a church car park in Somerset.

Police are investigating the incident which took place in the car park of Victoria Methodist Church, off Station Road in Weston-super-Mare, at about 12.45pm on Sunday May 1.

A 77-year-old lady had visited the supermarket across the road after attending the church service.

As she walked back into the car park a car turned in.

The driver grabbed her handbag and drove off, causing the victim to fall.

The woman was taken to Weston General Hospital as a precaution.

She was very shocked by the incident and suffered cuts and bruises.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Officers are reviewing CCTV in the area and are asking for anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the Station Road or Walliscote Road area about 12.45pm who may have seen a red or burgundy car leave the area at speed."
