A DRY and bright day is in store for Somerset as we head into the weekend.

Met Office forecasters are predicting temperatures will reach around 18C after a chilly start.

"After a rather cool start, most places will have a dry bright day with plenty of sunshine," a forecaster said.

"It will become rather breezy in Cornwall later, as well as on the north coast of Devon and Somerset."

A pleasant evening is expected for most and a dry start to the night, he added.

"The wind will strengthen late in the night and cloud will increase in the west."

However, Saturday is set to see some light rain and some stronger winds.

"A band of heavy rain will reach Cornwall in the late afternoon and spread eastwards by evening," the forecaster warned, although he said temperatures could hit 20C.

Meanwhile, the eyes of cricket fans will be looking east, to Lord's in West London, where Middlesex are taking on Yorkshire in a match which could see Somerset crowned champions.

Somerset did all they could yesterday, beating Nottinghamshire, but need the match to end in a draw to be pick up their first county championship title - and could do with a bit of help from the weather...

And it looks like bad light may be their only hope.

A Met Office forecaster said: "Starting fine but chilly, with sunshine after any local fog or mist patches lift.

"It will become a little cloudier and breezier later, with sunny spells turning increasingly hazy. However it should stay dry."
