BURNHAM'S annual firework display, which was postponed in November, will not be re-arranged, the town council has confirmed.

Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council congregated on Tuesday, December 12 to discuss a number of local matters, including re-scheduling the display.

The display was set to go ahead as normal on Sunday, November 5, but this coincided with the disappearance of Peter Jeffery, who went missing from the jetty when entering the sea to try and save a woman and her dog, just days before.

At the time, the town council made the decision to postpone the event out of respect, and confirmed it would be re-scheduled.

On the meeting agenda, it was recommended that the town council work to re-arrange the event on a day between Friday, January 26 and Sunday, January 28.

However, councillors unanimously decided to not reschedule the fireworks display, due to the already-incurred costs from its postponement leading to a stretched budget for carnival events.

According to the meeting agenda, Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council have incurred costs of £5,358 due to the postponed event.

A breakdown of the costs required to re-schedule the display shows a total of £7,113 needed to do so.

Due to the incurred costs from the postponed event, there is only £2,691.60 left in the Carnival Events Week budget.

The agenda shows a recommendation that the council approve additional expenditure from other budgets, but (as previously stated) this was decided against at the meeting itself.
