HIGHBRIDGE and Burnham Railway Station is one of Somerset's quietest train stations, despite a surge in usage this year, as figures show the number of passengers travelling in and out of the town by train has reached a record high since 2019.

The number of entries and exits at Highbridge and Burnham was 232,220 in the year to the end of March, regulator the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) said.

It was one of Somerset's least-used railway stations, proving more popular only than Frome, Yeovil Junction, Crewkerne, Yeovil Pen Mill, and Bruton.

Highbridge and Burnham's 2023 figure of over 230,000 was a record high when compared to recent years.

Before the pandemic, from April 2019 to March 2020, the station saw 212,650 entries and exits, almost 20,000 less than the most recent figure.

From April 2020 until March 2021, numbers were down due to Covid, and only 80,236 exits and entries were recorded.

Last year, 194,846 entries and exits occurred at the station, almost 40,000 less than in 2023.

These figures place Highbridge and Burnham Railway Station 1,166th in the most used UK railway stations this year.
