AN engineering consultancy has submitted plans to Somerset Council to tear down buildings at the former Royal Ordnance Factory - the site of the new gigafactory being built near Bridgwater.
Stantec has applied to alter a former planning application relating to engineering works to facilitate the remediation (including earthworks) and demolition of existing buildings on the site, as part of efforts to amend the Surface Water Management Strategy (SWMS).
The initial remediation consent was granted by the former Sedgemoor District Council in 2012, although since then, the applicant applied to amend a number of conditions to create a single ‘development plateau’ (development platform) at the site 'to provide flexibility for future occupants'.
As a result of this, the Stantec, on behalf of the applicant, stated: "There is a need for some minor changes to take place to the SWMS".
In the previously approved Surface Water Management Strategy document submitted by Stantec in December 2023, it was planned to infill all ditches within the plot boundaries as part of the work, before implementing an 'on-plot' drainage system.
Proposals in the plan also detailed demolishing the remaining buildings on the site, recycling suitable existing blast mound material to raise ground levels, and creating a landscaped mound at the west of the site.
These works were expected to take place over a five year period.
On behalf of the applicant, Stantec stated that demolishing the buildings on the Gravity site would ensure surface run-off rates remained constant as the building work took place, meaning no increase to the risk of flooding.
