PLANS have been submitted to Somerset Council for permission to convert a house in Burnham-on-Sea into a new care home.

Mr P Major has applied to turn the 76 Berrow Road property into a six-bedroom residential care home.

The applicant hopes to be granted an extension for the extant planning permission already granted to him in 2021 for 'identical proposals'.

There are no plans for any external or internal alterations to the building, but the applicant does hope to use the outside area and garage to create 12 parking spaces.

In line with the building's existing structure, six residents bedrooms would be situated on the first floor, along with one staff bedroom, two bathrooms, and one toilet.

On the ground floor, Mr Major hopes to use the space to accommodate two sitting rooms, a dining room, a morning room, a utility room, a kitchen, as well as an office, shower room, and toilet.

The news comes shortly after Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council voted to object to plans to convert the former Hillview Nursing Home - also on Berrow Road - into a 37-bedroom home in multiple occupation (HMO).

Hillview Nursing Home was forced to close in August 2022, after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) took “enforcement action” against it.

Public consultation is now open, and will run up until Thursday, February 29 - a decision could be made from the following day.
