A WILDLIFE rescue charity based in Highbridge was called to an incident near Weston-super-Mare after reports of a deer being stuck in a gate.

On Monday, March 11, teams from Secret World Wildlife Rescue rushed to the scene, whilst the caller who reported it waited with the deer in attempts to calm it down.

Upon arrival, it was evident that the deer had been stuck in place all night, and had picked up injuries from trying to squeeze through the metal bars.

Sadly, due to the extent of the female roe deer's injuries, she had to be put to sleep.

A spokesperson for Secret World Wildlife Rescue said: "Our team were able to act swiftly and rescue her from the gate, she was then transported to Green Pastures Vets.

"Upon assessment of her injuries, they sadly found signs of internal bleeding.

"The decision was made to put her to sleep to prevent any further suffering."

The charity urged the public to not attempt to free any deer they may find stuck in a fence or gate due to the risk of causing abrasion wounds, which lead to long term suffering.
