Somerset County Division One West

Burnham United 2, Clevedon United 7

BURNHAM United manager Luke Hussey refused to make excuses for his side as they crashed to a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Clevedon United on Saturday.

Trailing 3-1 at half-time, Burnham put in a disastrous defensive display in the final 20 minutes to slump to a heavy defeat - and Hussey said his side's performance “well below” what they are capable of.

He said: “We played poorly again today and have not shown any of our pre-season form in our league games.

“We have no excuses as individually and collectively we are playing well below what we are capable of.

“The squad is positive though and the team spirit suggests we will continue work hard to improve.”

A strong Clevedon United side took the lead on 15 minutes through a penalty and quickly followed it up with two further goals to send Burnham into half-time 3-1 down after Ed Lamb had pulled one back for the hosts.

After some alterations to formation it was Burnham who took a command of the first part of the second half and began to threaten, however it was Clevedon who scored against the run of play with a quick counter attack. Burnham responded with another goal for Ed Lamb with his second of the game but they capitulated in the last twenty minutes, conceding some alarmingly poor goals.

Lee Vaughan was again outstanding in defence and Charlie Harding continues to show his class in midfield growing in confidence and influence with each game.

Burnham travel to Weston St Johns this weekend searching for their first league point of the season.
