Somerset County Division One West

Burnham United 2, Wells City Res 1

BURNHAM United put in an impressive performance to see off high-flying Wells City Reserves at Cassis Close on Saturday.

Goals from Anthony Cleave and Alec Wilkins secured a vital three points for Luke Hussey’s side.

This turned out to be an entertaining fixture with both teams trying to play in difficult conditions and both fully committed.

It was the home side who created the earliest chances through the impressive Cleave and Wilkins combination up front - and with Charlie Harding pulling the strings in midfield ahead of Whitfield, Mylum and Stevens.

United were winning the midfield battle and started to look dangerous when Cleave was brought down just outside the box - he took the resulting free-kick and the keeper made an excellent save tipping the shot onto the crossbar only for Wilkins to pounce.

With time running out before the break, an astonishing attack from Russ Holley saw him carry the ball almost 50 yards beating a number of players and smash a shot that was bound for the too corner - somehow the impressive keeper managed to tip it over.

The second half carried on where the first ended - a fierce battle which both side attacked and Wells were rewarded with a scrappy equaliser.

The game was an evenly matched affair but Burnham always looked the more likely to score - and when substitute Beattie came on the momentum shifted United's way.

Cleave found himself in a one-on-one and coolly slotted past the keeper.

United showed their growing experience as they skilfully killed the remaining ten minutes and never looked troubled.
