Somerset Two South

Burnham II 12 Wyvern 47

BURNHAM were comfortably beaten by league leaders Wyvern at the BASC on Saturday.

The hosts crossed for two tries, courtesy of Alex Watkins and Ryan Maynard, but Wyvern proved too strong for Burnham, who were without a number of regular players.

Burnham started brightly and immediately went on the attack, taking the game deep into the visitors half and were denied a scoring chance when the ball was turned over on the visitor’s 10m line.

First blood went to Wyvern who scored from a well-executed back-row move.

They added a second shortly after from a charged down kick, but Burnham retaliated with some very good forwards and back play, orchestrated by Will Conway.

Into the second-half, Burnham continued to challenge and from a turnover, Will Conway sent the ball deep into Wyverns 22 – the kick was followed up by Ryan Maynard who snatched the high ball and crossed the line under the posts.

This started a period of intense pressure by the home side, again let down by the finishing which saw a lot of concerted effort lost to minor infringements in good try scoring positions.

The game was slipping away from the home side but still they maintained the pressure on the visitors - good work was being produced by the pack who were consistent in the scrum, with Lewis Dodge, Tom Wall, Sam Weekes and Jake Harding put in stalwart performances.

In the backs, Will Conway, Mason Shaw, Elliot Donnelly and Alex Watkins worked continuously to break into the visitor’s defence - and the effort finally paid off when Watkins crossed the line.

On Saturday, Burnham II are away to Bridgwater.
