Regional 2 Tribute South West: Burnham-on-Sea 12-32 North Petherton

BURNHAM-on-Sea RFC were defeated at home at the weekend in the Regional 2 Tribute South West division by North Petherton RFC.

It was a tense battle as both sides wanted to get bragging rights against their closest geographical rivals in the division.

Ultimately, North Petherton came out on top, with the final score being 12-32 in favour of the visitors.

Burnham had two sets of brothers in the squad for the match as James and Scott Havercroft and Ryan and Scott Beard were in the team.

Sam Wall opened the scoring in the match as he scored after five minutes putting Burnham in front. The try wasn't converted so the score was 5-0.

North Petherton pulled a try back through a long range line break from within their own 22 and the score was 5-5 as that try also went unconverted.

In the 30th minute, poor discipline from The Stags allowed Pethy to score and a yellow card was shown to Stefan Pearce.

With the extra man advantage, the visitors extended their lead to 5-17 after another try.

However on the stroke of halftime, Tim Piper found a way through the line to score and Scott Havercroft converted to leave the score at 12-17 at the break.

In the second half, North Petherton were ruthless in their defence and kept up doing the basics well.

Burnham tried to break down the line but found it difficult to find space and eventually tired in their efforts.

North Petherton scored a try to make it 12-25 with about 20 minutes left on the clock and they looked strong.

The visitors extended the lead a final time to 12-32 with one more score to pick up an extra bonus point in the victory.

All in all it was a good game of rugby from both sides but North Petherton did that bit more to take home the win.

The defeat leaves Burnham in bottom place in the league table while North Petherton move up to fifth place.

Petherton are now in touching distance to the top end of the table, just three points behind league leaders Wadebridge Camels.

Up next for Burnham is a trip to Devon to take on Sidmouth RFC on Saturday, October 21.
