Somerset Division One: Burnham United 2-0 Peasedown Miners Welfare

BURNHAM United went top of the league at the weekend after they defeated Peasedown Miners Welfare 2-0 at home.

Peasedown entered the game joint top of the league and undefeated, facing Burnham United at home the match was always going to be a good battle for the neutral.

In the wet and slippery conditions as we enter the winter months the ground was soft underneath and provided difficult conditions for both teams, but five minutes into the match saw Peasedown maintaining possession with some well worked football they hit the post and missed an open goal.

However on the next attack Burnham's Josh Watkins passed the ball out wide to Nathan Bishop who lobbed Peasedown goalkeeper Callum Heal into the far left corner. Was it a cross or shot? Only Bishop knows certainly a nice finish if he did.

Peasedown continued trying to break through Burnham United backline and on 13 minutes they beat the offside trap and the keeper Tom Edwards only for the corner of the crossbar to save Burnham this time.

39 minutes into the match and Jordan Costello pressed the ball on the left wing winning possession back for Joe Selway to play the ball through to Curtis Bradshaw who reversed his shot for it to hit the left post and bounce back into the path of the Peasedown defence to clear.

The score was 1-0 to Burnham as the Half came to a close. As both teams entered the field of play for the second half the heavens opened and the darkness and sounds of thunder coming over cassis close only added to the tension during the game.

The half was dominated by Peasedown possession and Burnham playing on the counter attack.

There was very little in the terms of clear opportunities during the second 45 as Burnham United's captain Russell Holley alongside James Chinnock and Ben Gates were resilient in defence clearing any threat towards goal.

Tom Edwards only had one notable save to make after a curling shot throughout the second half however for all Peasedown's possession it was a counter attack in the 90th minute that saw Jaymie Whitehouse make it 2-0 to the home side after the Heal parried his first effort back to him for Whitehouse to seal the 3 points.

After the match Burnham United Manager Steve Hainsby said: " I’m so proud of every single one of the lads today. It was a tough game but they put it all on the line to get those 3 points and show what a hard working team we can be."

Russell Holley was awarded Player of the match after a dominant defensive display and showing what true leaders are made of.

Next up for the Seasiders an away trip to second in the league Middlezoy Rovers Saturday November 4th.
